Yes, Engagement Sessions are IMPORTANT!

I was cruising thru Reddit the other day and I stumbled across a posting about what brides regretted spending their money on. Someone actually responded "Engagement Photos. Because I put them in a drawer and never looked at them again"

Okay, yeah, that is absolutely not the correct answer. I can’t speak for this individual; maybe they didn’t like their photos…
….or they had a bad experience with their photographer
…..or they were never taught the importance of these photos and how to use them…..
Either way… each person is entitled to their own views. I can only hope they’ll look back at their engagement photos and have a fond memory, or a good story.

There’s a bunch of reasons you may be on the fence about an engagement session. Brides I’ve spoken to recently have felt engagement sessions are a luxury add on or something unnecessary, some aren’t the biggest fans of taking photos (or their grooms aren’t), some just don’t feel like they have the time. If you’re not comfortable, or you're already stressed with everything that’s going on…. why do it?

Truth is…. most photographers would recommend it. Not just because you’ll get pretty professional photos for (possibly) the first time in your relationship, but because you’ll get comfortable in front of the camera.

For real, one day in the very near future, you and your fiance/e will be standing in front of hundreds of eyes, and camera lenses. You’ll be photographed more on your wedding day than you will in your whole life….. you need to get comfortable. Not everyone feels comfortable posing right away, and there’s going to be tons of time to get candid photos during the wedding day. The engagement session gives you an opportunity to see how your photographer works and how they will coach you through posing. You’ll learn how to keep yourself at ease, so you won’t look so awkward during the big day.

Speaking of your photographer….. you’ve probably met with them once and exchanged a few emails. The engagement session gives you guys an opportunity to connect, share experiences, ask questions, and get know each other a bit more intimately before the big day. This photographer is going to be with you from getting ready all the way through boogying on the dance floor at the reception. You have to make sure this is someone you know, like, and trust to document your big day. You’ll also get to see a sneak peek of what your wedding photos will look like, and get super stoked about it!

Plus, you and your groom get a chance to reconnect and celebrate your love.

Wedding planning is stressful! Sometimes, you get so frustrated, you don’t even want to LOOK at your person during the planning process. The engagement session gives you two an opportunity to take in this exciting time in your life. You can choose a space that’s meaningful to you; where you first met, where you get your Saturday morning coffee, a park where you two play frisbee golf….You get to wear something special, and spend some time flirting with, kissing, and teasing your person.

Many couples love their engagement photos because they feel it’s a more true and honest representation of them. They don’t have a real reason to be shy, they’re in a space they love, they’re able to wear something besides their wedding attire…. they get to have collaborative control over the whole session, and really make it meaningful for them.

Not to mention the awesome photos you’ll have for your save the dates, invites, wedding websites, and as decoration at the wedding itself.

Seriously, Engagement pictures are NOT a waste of money. They’re another thing you get to enjoy during this awesome time in your life. Take the chance on an engagement session and make it something special. You have an opportunity to really relish in this time, take a picture….. make the memory last. <3
